Volleyball in Lombok: Join Our Weekly Sunset Games at Mawun Valley Farm

If you've been searching for volleyball in Lombok, your search ends here. Every Thursday at 4 PM, a group of travelers, expats, and locals gather at Mawun Valley Farm for what's become one of South Lombok's most beloved weekly traditions: sunset volleyball on a grass court surrounded by rolling hills and farm animals.

Whether you're a seasoned player or someone who hasn't touched a volleyball since high school PE class, you're welcome here. The games are casual, the vibes are friendly, and the sunset views are absolutely worth the trip.

Why Volleyball at Mawun Valley Farm?

Lombok has no shortage of beautiful beaches and activities, but finding regular, organized sports can be surprisingly difficult. Most volleyball happens spontaneously on beaches — fun, but inconsistent. What makes our Thursday games different is the consistency and community.

Every week, same time, same place. You know exactly what you're getting: a proper grass court with a new net, a group of friendly people, cold drinks waiting for you afterward, and that golden hour light that makes everything look magical.

The setting itself is unlike any volleyball experience you've had. You're not on a crowded beach dodging sunbathers. You're on a working farm in the hills above Mawun Beach, playing as the sun drops toward the horizon and paints the sky in oranges and pinks.

What to Expect at Thursday Volleyball

The Setup

Our grass volleyball court sits in one of the most scenic spots on the farm. The net is new, properly tensioned, and at regulation height. We provide the volleyball — you just need to show up ready to play.

The court surface is natural grass, which is easier on your joints than sand and provides better footing for those who find beach volleyball challenging. It's a nice middle ground that works for all skill levels.

The Schedule

When: Every Thursday
Time: 4:00 PM
Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours
Price: IDR 100,000 per person

Games typically run until around 5:30 PM, right when the sunset is at its peak. Some players stick around afterward to grab dinner at Noni's Farm Café or just hang out and enjoy the evening.

What's Included

Your IDR 100,000 gets you more than just court time:

  • Full use of the grass volleyball court with proper net
  • Volleyball provided — no need to bring your own
  • 1 liter of cold water to stay hydrated during play
  • One drink of your choice from Noni's Farm Café (hot or cold)
  • Access to outdoor showers and toilets to freshen up after
  • That incredible sunset — not technically included, but it shows up every week anyway

The Crowd

Expect a mix of people: digital nomads working from Lombok, surfers taking a rest day, travelers passing through, expats who've made the island home, and occasionally locals who've heard about the games. Ages range from early twenties to fifties, skill levels from "I played in college" to "please don't aim at me."

What everyone has in common is a desire to have fun, get some exercise, and meet new people. Competitive jerks don't last long here — the vibe is firmly in the "friendly pickup game" territory.

All Skill Levels Welcome (We Mean It)

Let's address the elephant in the room: what if you're not good at volleyball?

First, you're probably better than you think. Second, it genuinely doesn't matter. The games are organized to be inclusive. We mix up teams regularly, experienced players help beginners, and the focus is on everyone having a good time — not on winning.

If you can get a ball over the net occasionally and you're willing to laugh at yourself when you miss, you'll fit right in. Some of our most enthusiastic regulars started out barely able to serve.

Tips for Beginners

For serving: An underhand serve is perfectly acceptable and much easier to control than overhand. Focus on just getting it over the net consistently.

For receiving: Keep your arms together, bend your knees, and try to position yourself under the ball rather than reaching for it sideways.

For setting: You don't have to be fancy. Getting the ball to a teammate, even imperfectly, is more valuable than trying a perfect set and missing completely.

For spiking: Unless you're confident, focus on placement over power. A well-placed tap beats a wild slam that goes out of bounds.

Most importantly: Communicate with your teammates, call the ball, and don't apologize every time you make a mistake. Everyone's learning.

How to Join the Weekly Games

Getting involved couldn't be simpler:

  1. Join our WhatsApp group — Visit our events page and click the WhatsApp link for volleyball
  2. Introduce yourself in the group so we know you're coming
  3. Show up on Thursday at 4 PM ready to play

That's it. No registration forms, no membership fees, no commitments. Come once or come every week — it's up to you.

The WhatsApp group is also where we post updates. If there's heavy rain or the court is unplayable for any reason, we'll let everyone know. Typically, games happen rain or shine, but we'll communicate if conditions change.

Getting to Mawun Valley Farm

The farm is located in the hills above Mawun Beach in South Lombok, about 20 minutes from Kuta Lombok town center.

From Kuta Lombok

Head west on the main road toward Mawun Beach. Before you reach the beach, look for the signs pointing to Mawun Valley Farm. We're up the hill from the main road — the turn is easy to miss if you're not watching for it.

If you're using Google Maps, search for "Mawun Valley Farm" and it should guide you directly. The last stretch is an unpaved road, but it's well-maintained and passable by scooter.

Parking

There's ample parking for both scooters and cars. If you're coming by Grab or Gojek, have your driver drop you at the farm entrance and arrange pickup for afterward.

What to Bring

Essential

  • Comfortable athletic clothes — shorts and a t-shirt work great
  • Closed-toe shoes with grip — the grass can be slippery, especially if there's been rain
  • Sunscreen — you'll be playing during golden hour, but there's still plenty of UV
  • Cash — IDR 100,000 for the session
  • A change of clothes — you'll probably get sweaty
  • A small towel — outdoor showers are available
  • Knee pads — if you're planning to dive for balls on grass
  • Your own water bottle — we provide 1L but you might want more

Don't Worry About

  • Volleyball — we've got you covered
  • Fancy gear — nobody cares what brand your shoes are

The After-Game Scene

The volleyball might end at 5:30, but the evening often continues. Many players head to Noni's Farm Café for dinner after showering off. The café serves farm-to-table Indonesian dishes, cold beers, fresh juices, and excellent coffee.

It's become an unofficial tradition — volleyball followed by dinner with your new friends, watching the last light fade from the sky while discussing tomorrow's surf conditions or comparing notes on Lombok's best warungs.

If you're staying at the farm, you can simply walk back to your cabin after. If you're heading back to Kuta, stick around for the sunset views — they're some of the best on the island.

Beyond Volleyball: Other Farm Events

Thursday volleyball is just one of the regular events at Mawun Valley Farm. If you enjoy the community vibe, you might also like:

Friday BBQ Nights — Every Friday, the farm hosts a BBQ dinner with grilled meats, fresh salads, and good conversation. It's another great way to meet people. Check our events page for details.

Cooking Classes — Learn to make cashew apple jam or traditional Indonesian dishes using ingredients fresh from the farm.

Farm Stays — If you want more than a few hours at the farm, consider booking a cabin. Wake up to rooster calls, drink coffee overlooking the valley, and make the farm your Lombok home base.

Why Sports Tourism Matters

There's something special about connecting with a place through physical activity. When you play volleyball at sunset on a Lombok farm, you're not just exercising — you're participating in a community, creating memories with strangers who become friends, and experiencing the island in a way that beaches and temples alone can't offer.

Sports create shared experiences that transcend language barriers and cultural differences. The person you high-five after a good rally might be from a completely different country and background, but in that moment, you're teammates.

This is what we're building at Mawun Valley Farm: genuine connections, facilitated by beautiful surroundings and fun activities. The volleyball court is just the setting. The real magic is the community that shows up every week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come alone?
Absolutely. Most people come solo and meet others at the games. That's kind of the point.

What if it rains?
Light rain? We play. Heavy rain? We'll update the WhatsApp group. The grass court drains well, so we can often play shortly after rain stops.
