The Slow Screen: Outdoor Cinema in Lombok Under the Stars
There's something special about people gathering under the stars to share a story.
Cinema has always been a communal experience. You go somewhere. You sit with others. The film ends, and you walk out together into the night, processing what you just experienced.
At Mawun Valley Farm, we've created a space for exactly this — and we call it The Slow Screen.
What Is The Slow Screen?
Every Wednesday evening, the natural amphitheater at Mawun Valley Farm transforms into an open-air cinema. Fifteen cushioned seats on terraced wood, carpets spread across the grass, and a screen set against the valley sky.
The rustle of leaves during a quiet scene. Fireflies appearing as if on cue. The smell of popcorn mixing with tropical night air. And the company of others who chose to be present — really present — for an evening.
We keep it small on purpose. Fifteen people maximum. This isn't a crowd — it's a gathering. You'll know who's sitting near you. You might share a comment afterward. The intimacy is the point.
The Philosophy: Slow Over Fast
Our film selection follows the same philosophy as everything else at Mawun Valley:
Slow over fast. Depth over distraction. Connection over consumption.
We choose films that:
- Celebrate simple living — stories where happiness comes from relationships, nature, and meaningful work
- Honor the natural world — films that make you notice the beauty in landscapes, seasons, and growing things
- Welcome all ages — families watch together; children aren't sent elsewhere while adults have "their" experience
- Leave you better — you walk away feeling hopeful, reflective, or inspired
- Reward attention — slow pacing that trusts the viewer, not constant cuts demanding focus
This isn't about entertainment as escape. It's about stories that reconnect you to what matters.

The Values We Create
Presence Over Distraction
For two hours, phones go away. Eyes look up instead of down. We remember what undivided attention feels like.
Shared Experience
Laughing with others hits different than laughing alone. A beautiful scene becomes more beautiful when you sense others feeling it too.
Conversation Afterward
The film ends, but the evening doesn't. Stay for tea. Talk about what you watched. This is how stories are meant to be experienced.
Connection to Place
You're not watching a film about nature in a concrete box. You're in nature, watching a story about nature, with the real thing all around you.
Who Is The Slow Screen For?
👨👩👧👦 Families
A screen experience you don't feel guilty about. Quality time that doesn't require everyone to "do" something — sometimes just being together in the dark, sharing popcorn, is enough.
All our films are family-friendly. Children aren't separated from the experience; they're welcomed into it.
💑 Couples
A date night that offers both togetherness and shared reference points for later conversation. Romance without pressure; intimacy through parallel experience.
Side-by-side on comfortable cushions, shared blanket as evening cools, something meaningful to discuss afterward. The setting does the romantic work.
🎒 Solo Travelers
Community without commitment. You're welcomed into a gathering, share an experience with strangers, and leave with a memory that feels social rather than solitary.
No forced interaction, but connection available if you want it. The perfect middle ground.
🧘 Anyone Seeking Slowness
Two hours where you can't check email, can't scroll, can't optimize. Just sit. Watch. Breathe the night air.
If you've been moving fast and need permission to stop, The Slow Screen provides it.
